C’era un volta una bambina che sognava di diventare ballerina, una ballerina che voleva diventare attrice, una attrice che si innamorò della regia e infine una regista che incontrò il Führer e diventò la migliore. Così potremmo riassumere la storia di Leni Riefenstahl, “La più grande regista mai esistita” come è stata definita da Quentin Tarantino in una intervista rilasciata al Der Spiegel nel 2009. Il destino ha voluto che Adolf Hitler si innamorasse della sua “danza sul mare” in La Montagna dell’Amore, e che la sua strada si incrociasse con quella del Nazionalsocialismo: questo ha rappresentato per le coscienze democratiche un problema tale che per molti anni, nel dopoguerra, Leni Riefenstahl è stata relegata all’oblio. Non importava quanto fosse grande il suo genio artistico, occorreva dimenticare la regista di Hitler. Per anni è stata sottoposta a processi di denazificazione e ad umiliazioni di ogni tipo, ma Leni Riefenstahl non ha mai rinnegato la sua fascinazione per il Führer: una fedeltà che non le è mai stata perdonata. Nonostante ciò alla fine, si è dovuto riconoscere che la sua arte filmica ha rappresentato “un sfida intellettuale” che nessuno è mai riuscito ad eguagliare: come Massimiliano Studer ha osservato “Olympia e Triumph des Willens rappresentano in pieno tutta l’estetica del Novecento tanto da essere, ancora oggi, utilizzati e citati da molti registi”. Non possiamo che essere d’accordo con Gianni Rondolino quando dice che “Leni Riefenstahl fa parte integrante della cultura del Novecento”.
